Great news for everyone in California – both residents and businesses! The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) just launched on January 18, 2024, ahead of Data Privacy Week, a fantastic, user-friendly website, https://privacy.ca.gov, designed to help Californians understand their privacy rights and for businesses to comprehend their obligations under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA - CPRA).

What is Data Privacy Week?

Data Privacy Week, starting January 22, is a big deal in the United States, Canada, and over 45 European countries. It is an international event that occurs annually at the end of January, with the goal to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices among both individuals and organizations, and emphasizes the importance of protecting personal information in our digital age, reflecting growing concerns about how personal data is handled and safeguarded by organizations and governments worldwide.

To help businesses observe this event, we’ve provided 11 best practices for your business’ compliance with data privacy laws in 2024, in a related blog post.

Features of the new website

Whether you're a California resident wanting to protect your personal information or a business striving to comply with privacy laws, https://privacy.ca.gov is your go-to resource, according to the official press release published on the CPPA’s website. The website is easy to navigate, informative, and packed with all the tools you need to stay informed and compliant in the realm of privacy, whether you are a business affected by the CCPA - CPRA, or a consumer.

In the press release, Ashkan Soltani, the Executive Director of the CPPA, stated:

Privacy is in the California Constitution, and California leads the U.S. in privacy protections. We’re proud to help develop this important resource to showcase the broad range of protections they have under the CCPA and other laws. [...] “In this new era of rapid technological change, we think it’s more important than ever for Californians to be equipped with the information they need to protect their fundamental rights. We will continue to add additional resources to this website to make it as helpful to visitors as possible.

For Residents: Know Your Rights and How to Protect Them

The website is a trove of information for residents. It clearly explains your rights under the CCPA and provides practical advice on what to do if you believe a business is not respecting your privacy. Think of it as your personal guide to privacy protection. If you're facing issues like data breaches or identity theft, the website offers you a way to submit a CCPA complaint and the 'Additional Protections' section is particularly useful, offering guidance and directing you to other government agencies that can assist.

For Businesses: Understanding and Complying with CCPA

Businesses, this website is also for you. It outlines your responsibilities under the CCPA and provides resources to help you comply with the law. By understanding these obligations, you can ensure that your business practices align with California's privacy standards, thereby building trust with your customers.

The website isn't static; according to Ashkan Soltani it will continue to receive updates, ensuring that both residents and businesses have the most current information in this fast-paced digital world.
